Το ταξίδι προς τη Δύση αρχίζει: ο Λίβιος Ανδρόνικος και η πρώτη μετάφραση της Οδύσσειας
Περίληψη
Η μετάφραση της Οδύσσειας στα λατινικά από τον Λίβιο Ανδρόνικο είναι έργο σταθμός στην ιστορία της λογοτεχνίας: με τον Λίβιο Ανδρόνικο και την Odusia, η ελληνική λογοτεχνία αφικνείται στη Ρώμη. Στην παρούσα εργασία προτίθεμαι να θίξω μια σειρά από σημαντικά ζητήματα τα οποία συνδέονται με το εγχείρημα του Λίβιου, και να σχολιάσω την ευρέως διαδεδομένη άποψη ότι η πρώτη μετάφραση της Οδύσσειας κατέστη εμβληματική μιας επανάστασης τόσο γλωσσικής όσο και πολιτισμικής, διότι το κείμενο της Odusia του Λίβιου έθεσε τα θεμέλια για μια νέα λογοτεχνική παράδοση σε μια νέα γλώσσα (λατινικά) και στο πλαίσιο ενός διαφορετικού πολιτισμού (ρωμαϊκού πολιτισμού). Οι επισημάνσεις μου θα συμβάλουν στην πληρέστερη αποτίμηση των πολιτισμικών συνθηκών που περιέβαλαν τη γένεση της Odusia και θα βοηθήσουν στην αξιολόγηση της μεταφραστικής προσπάθειας του Λίβιου.
ABSTRACT
The translation of the Odyssey into Latin by Livius Andronicus is a landmark piece of literature: with Livius Andronicus, Greek literature crosses the Adriatic and fuels the beginnings of Latin literature. In the paper at hand I shall touch on a number of important issues associated with Livius enterprise, and I shall discuss the widely-held view that the first translation of the Odyssey became emblematic of a revolution that is both linguistic and cul-tural, because the text of the Livian Odusia laid the foundations for a new literary tradition in a new language (Latin) and culture (Roman culture). I will also share some thoughts on the possible reasons behind Livius decision to translate the Odyssey, which might lead us to appreciate more thoroughly the nuanced cultural context that generated the Odusia.
