Abstract

The present study focuses on the reception of ancient Greek myths, the Brechtian influences and the coexistence of these two components in the francophone dramaturgy of Martinique, and is an adapted, enriched and updated part of a currently unpublished monograph on the reception of ancient Greek myths and ancient Greek theater in the Antilles, sub-Saharan Africa and the Maghreb. We will begin our approach with a historical, geographical and cultural position of Martinique in the particular island area of the Antilles, while we will continue by submitting briefly basic features of its francophone theater. This will be followed by a brief first explanatory look at the reasons for the presence of elements from Greek myths and ancient Greek tragedies in dramaturgical creations of contemporary francophone Martinican artists (Aimé Césaire, Edouard Glissant, Daniel Boukman, Patrick Chamoiseau, Suzanne Dracius και Gaël Octavia), as well as a brief placement of the basic principles of the dramatological philosophy of Bertolt Brecht. In the next stage, we will attempt to demonstrate the mechanisms and parameters according to which these two main influences coexist and shape the peculiar political, thematic and aesthetic identity of modern Martinican francophone dramaturgy, but also to evaluate the final theatrical product in terms of historicity, figurative identity and ideological problematics, utilizing as examples indicative modern theatrical plays by these dramatists from Martinique.
