Abstract

This paper aims to examine the connection between theory and practice in including tests and alternative assessment methods in teaching German as a Foreign Language. After underlying the important role which assessment plays in the recent curricula and focusing on the neu Common Curriculum for Teaching Foreign Languages in Greece, I analyse important aspects which
teachers should take into consideration when they develop material in order to evaluate competence in the foreign language by using alternative assessment methods and by using tests. In this context, I also make proposals for testing and evaluating different language activities. In conclusion, factors are examined which may cause unexpected results at the process of the implementation of theory into practice and finally proposals for reaching a positive washback- effect in the teaching process are presented.
